Game modes, story details, weapons, companions and more in our pre-preview of Farcry 5.

Since the announcement trailer released 7 months ago in May, we have had a trickle of new information coming through about Farcry 5. A slow trickle, kind of like how treacle would pour from a jar. Nevertheless, we have compiled a fair bit of info on Ubisoft’s next open world shooter.

Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platforms: Windows / PlayStation 4 / Xbox One
Release Date: 27th March 2018

The World

Much different to the lush tropical islands, jungles or mountains of previous Farcry games. The fictional Hope County, in the US state of Montana, features large open grassy plains, farms, streams, forests and treacherous mountains. The landscape is dotted with little American towns that could be taken right out of a Western, a perfect setting for a modern-day take-over by a religious cult!

Expect tonnes of places to explore, winding roads to race down, buildings to blow up and loads of other nooks and crannies that contain secrets and perhaps even missions. This is as we would expect from a Ubisoft open-world game.

The player takes on the role of a sheriff’s deputy who is part of the task force sent to Hope County to arrest the leader of a religious cult who have taken control of the area. Based on real-life cults, “Project At Eden’s Gate” has been created by Ubisoft and placed in Hope County to provoke a feeling of issues that may be more close to home. The game’s antagonists are a little more believable than a bunch of pirates and warlords who somehow manage to take over an entire archipelago of islands. Ubisoft even used real-life cult expert, Rick Ross, who is a federal court level court certified in the US.

Farcry 5
It’s all quite peaceful until that crop duster starts dropping bombs all over the place.

“The Father” heads up this Cult. His mission: to convert the population of Hope County to his congregation, who he feels are needed to survive, what he believes to be, the coming apocalypse.  His family make-up the games secondary characters who are likely to be the main narrative forces in the game.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a particularly massive rock the last few years, you should know the formula here. Farcry is renowned for its large open spaces, sandbox style gameplay; a combination of stealth or guns blazing the first-person action. You’re also normally at odds with the particularly aggressive wildlife in these games.

Farcry 5
I mean, you could always use dynamite

For the past two or three titles, there has been heavy emphasis around clearing out “camps” of bad guys using various tactics, having access to various vehicles and allies and completing main story missions as well as side missions. The game’s maps are littered with collectables and secrets that exist for the completionists among you, but on occasion provide you with bonus items or experience.

Farcry 5 from what we have seen in various gameplay trailers, streams and preview videos, is largely unchanged from this formula. Is that an issue? Depends if you’re looking for a revolutionary first-person shooter or just Farcry in a new setting with a different story and a few new features. I do find a certain appeal in planning an attack on an enemy encampment while simultaneously facing off against a brown bear that is trying to rip my face off.

One stand-out new feature is “Guns for Hire”. The ability to hire companions to follow you around the map, all of which have different abilities to support you. Kind of like “Buddies from “MGS V: The Phantom Pain” only maybe not quite as outlandish as giving yourself an armed-to-the-teeth bipedal robot you can ride on, but still kind of interesting.

Farcry 5
Best game of fetch ever

Boomer, a grey mongrel dog (actually one of the “Fangs for Hire”) can take down and disrupt enemies, but can also be commanded to find items, weapons and ammo for you. Grace is a sniper who can get up close and personal but is best on overwatch, providing you with covering fire. The stand-out “Gun for Hire” though is definitely Nick Rye, mainly as he flies around in a crop duster and can drop bombs on the bad guys for you. Nice!

This is all nothing revolutionary, but here’s hoping the story and setting do enough to pique our interest in the game and keep us scratching off the various places in the map we haven’t explored.

The Bad Guys

From a gameplay standpoint, the cult serve as a frightening bunch of zealous militants. Toting various kinds of weaponry from baseball bats to machine guns. They will also patrol and chase you down in flat-bed trucks and jeeps. Again, nothing majorly new here from previous games, but it’s nice to see a much more believable enemy to engage with.

Farcry 5
The Last Supper, or the Mad Hatters Tea Party?

Let’s not forget the local man-eating fauna of Hope County. Instead of tigers and rhinos, you’ll be up against brown bears, wolves, mountain lions, snakes and the occasional malicious bee-hive! Animals were always a fun addition to the Farcry series, adding a new element of tension to the game but also serving as a resource to construct new gear and generate income with local traders.

Weapons, Items and Vehicles

We all want to know about the toys on offer in this title, it is a Farcry game after all! From what’s been revealed, it’s apparent the standard arsenal of firearms are all there. RPGs, assault rifles, sniper rifles and pistols. There’s also the return of the infamous bow and arrow, kitted out with regular arrowheads and explosive. In keeping with the American theme this time around, there’s also the appearance of a sawn-off shotgun, a revolver and a baseball bat painted with the American flag.

Farcry 5
Ah, the classic American semi-truck and tractor combo. Works a treat!

What I’m excited about are some of the vehicles. The 18-wheeler semi-tuck painted garishly with flames, white stars and bald eagles is a standout choice. There are even tractors and crop-duster aircraft available, the latter looking like a really fun choice. But if you’re just after some style and speed, you can always jump in the American muscle-car styled Coupe.

The entire campaign will be playable with a real life buddy with the addition of a co-op mode. This is an online-only feature and is not available in local play/ split-screen. Players will both see all the same cut-scenes missions, map markers and cannot venture too far away from each other.

Currently there is no mention from Ubisoft of there being any other Multiplayer features of any kind. To be honest the Farcry series is not one I look towards for a decent multi-player component, so I won’t get my hopes up.
